aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 Alliance Site is Closing!

Fri, July 31: Sad but true ... one of the first and staunchest supporters of MAX2 has declared "it is impossible for me to support a game that I just don't like". Hopefully his Alliance Forum will stay open ... I volunteered to keep it up but have not received official word back on it. - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes) Interplay Rakes In The Money!

Fri, July 31: Interplay reported its first quarter of revenues as a PUBLICLY TRADED company on June 30, 1998. Revenues were up 98.6% (read the full report). Based on this news ... can you guess why Interplay released MAX2 even though it was unfinished? - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 Patch 1.3.1 or 1.4 still not released!

Fri, July 31: The new patch is still not available. Interplay has previously stated that the patch "is in QA and should be signed off soon", but that was on July 23. And on July 21 it was done and would be released that night or the next day. "So much for that" as someone said in the Interplay ONLINE forum. As usual, I will keep watch and let you know when it is safe to try to play MAX2 again. - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 Reviews!

Fri, July 31: There are now TWO reviews of MAX2 posted on the web (both are far too kind to MAX2 in my opinion). Links to them are near the bottom of the LINKS page - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 Today!

Tue, July 28:  As final touches are made to the EVENT promised for tonight, TRIPOD (the NEWS & FILES half of MAX2 HEAVEN) is not letting me upload new pages! I could just cancel the event, but scheduling an event and then canceling it at the last moment is not very nice. I have created a temporary EVENT PAGE that will have the EVENT announcement tonight if I can't get it posted here as planned. - CaptComal

DRAT ... it would not let me post this updated page either. I have replaced it with a TINY announcement and link. Hope we can upload this page soon!

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 Tomorrow!

Mon, July 27:  Major MAX2 Event will be announced here tomorrow. Check frequently ... we cannot guarantee it won't get removed! - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 Patch 1.3.1 or 1.4 still not released!

Thur, July 23, 6:00pm Pacific time: The new patch is still not available. Interplay states that the patch "is in QA and should be signed off soon". As usual, I will keep watch and let you know when it is safe to try to play MAX2 again. - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 QA ... or the story of Kwah...

Thur, July 23, high noon Pacific time (that is 12:00pm to you): Still no new patch. But we HAD a breaking story (which has been removed ... sorry). - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 Patch 1.3.1 or 1.4 are unreal!

Thur, July 23, 6:20am Pacific time: I woke up to check. The world is still here ... the patch is not! As usual, I will keep watch and let you know when it is safe to try to play MAX2 again. - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 Patch 1.3.1 or 1.4 not released!

Thur, July 23, 12:15am Pacific time: The new patch was not released yesterday or the day before as Interplay suggested it would be. The world as we know it is doomed! Oops, that is a movie plot. As usual, I will keep watch and let you know when it is safe to try to play MAX2 again. - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 Campaigns - The List!

Wed, July 22: The list of every mission in each of the 4 campaigns is being posted now.  It includes the campaign and mission number, name of the mission, win and loss conditions plus a thumbnail picture of the map it is played on. Once this list is completed I will begin posting strategies for each mission, but I have one problem.   Nobody has sent in any strategies yet!  I don't want this to be a CaptComal Strategy page ... it is supposed to be a collection of strategies from various people showing the many ways to accomplish things. So, hurry up and submit your strategies for any mission now (be the first on your block!) Strategies submitted can be simple hints or tips or complete walk throughs. Make sure to specify which campaign/mission with your strategies (and what name I should give credit to). Send to CaptComal@hotmail.com  - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 TRICK - Make ALL Campaign Missions Playable!

Wed, July 22: io HISS has kindly shared this information with us!

To make all Campaigns and Missions playable you need to change two numbers in your MAX2.INI file. The first section in the file is titled [SETUP]. Change the number in the following two lines to be 49 (means campaign 4 mission 9):

current_campaign_1_mission=49
current_campaign_mission=49

Do not change the text in front of the = though! Only change the number at the end of these two lines! It should not be necessary, but you may need to change the skipped numbers to be 0 as well, as noted below:

last_campaign_1_skipped=0
last_campaign_2_skipped=0
last_campaign_3_skipped=0
last_campaign_4_skipped=0

With these changes you should be able to play any mission at any time in any order. Thanks io HISS! - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 Patch 1.3.1 or 1.4 still not released!

Wed, July 22, 8:40pm Pacific time: The new patch is not yet available! Only 3 HOURS and 20 MINUTES left for their promised release! I will keep watch and let you know when it is safe to try to play MAX2 again. - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 Patch 1.3.1 or 1.4 still not released!

Wed, July 22, 11:30am Pacific time: The new patch is not yet available (Paul just informed it is still scheduled for release later today)! I will keep watch and let you know when it is safe to try to play MAX2 again. - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 Bugs & Crashes that won't be fixed with Patch 1.3.1 or 1.4!

Wed, July 22: When the new patch comes out (later today is the promise from Interplay) it will not fix these bugs that they are aware of and are working on for the NEXT patch (1.5 or 1.3.2 depending on whose numbering scheme is used) ... this, of course, is also on our CRASH page:

  1. Phantom Units --  Units left on the map after battle that don't exist
  2. Fog of War  -- redraws to be improved
  3. Unit Activate Child = 0 -- Crash
  4. Units on Patrol -- can cause out of sync problems if they are attacked
  5. Possible crash if Host has AutoSave turned off.
  6. Random Multiplayer Crashes associated with constructor
(note: originally they said this was fixed, but removed it from their list)
  7. Opening Preference Menu pauses Multiplayer games.
(note: originally they said this was fixed, but removed it from their list)

I am tracking the BUGS and CRASHES and ask that you send me EMail with your reports (make sure Interplay gets a copy of the EMail too). Please don't report bugs or crashes with 1.3 ... let's start with the 1.3.1 or 1.4 patch coming out later today! Send your EMail to:

max2@interplay.com

CaptComal@hotmail.com

Thanks. - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 Patch 1.3.1 or 1.4 still not released!

Wed, July 22, 10:15am Pacific time: The new patch is not yet available (promised for yesterday or today availability)! I will keep watch and let you know when it is safe to try to play MAX2 again. - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 problems due to Beta Testers?

Wed, July 22: I just received from Interplay, the official announcement for the MAX2 IRC CHAT tomorrow at 6pm (it is on our HEADLINE NEWS PAGE already). The announcement is for several CHATS (covering several different games). Each game is described with a couple sentences and you might like to know how Interplay is describing MAX2 now:

"M.A.X.2 - Thursday, July 23 - 6PM Pacific Daylight time (03:00AM GMT/July 24) - Come chat with the developers of M.A.X.2, the sequel to the award-winning strategy game M.A.X.! M.A.X.2 features real-time, turn-based, or simultaneous turn-based play. M.A.X.2 has been extensively beta-tested by gamers and was developed largely on their feedback. The chat will be held at Interplay's chat server; point your browser to http://www.annexcafe.com/chat/asp/java/%23interplay.htm or use your IRC client to log into chat.annex.com port 6667 and join the #interplay channel. T-Shirts will be given away so don't miss this chat!"

Did you notice the spin on MAX2? They now state that the game was extensively beta tested and largely developed on feedback from the Beta Testers. Do any Beta Testers have any comments on this? If so please post them on the Interplay Online Message Forum! As for me ... I think the game was vastly under tested. Just look at the Beta Tester status when the game went GOLD on June 18: We have an example of a mission that apparently never was even played through once in SIM or TB modes. The beta testers only got to see TWO maps (and both these maps were not the final versions ... they lacked the yellow and orange grids). The beta testers never got to see the Sheevat units at all.  Beta testers never got to try Capture the Flag. Beta testers never saw a single campaign or mission. Beta Testers never even got to try a game with all the human units available all at one time! Beta testers never were allowed to play multiplayer ... and the free internet MAX2.NET server was not even up when MAX2 went gold (from what we can tell). That is just the tip of the iceberg concerning what the Beta Testers were ALLOWED to test. Now, about being developed largely on the feedback of Beta Testers? I will leave comments on that for others ... I hope to see some good messages on the Interplay Online Forum soon! - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes) Wonderful Opinion Piece on multiplayer game rankings!

Tue, July 21: During the months leading up to the final release of Dark Reign, I was doing the Dark Reign Heaven site, and always admired the wit and wisdom of the man known as "DOM" (What does that stand for? Well, if you must know ... he used to call himself Drunk Old Man, but he was anything but that!). I lost track of him once Dark Reign was released, but just now discovered that he is writing for Area-S ... and his latest RANT is simply fantastic (it helps that I agree with it 100%). It is not that long, so if you have an extra minute or two, you really should read it: Drunken Rant Number 3: Storm Over Blizzard (you can skip the first part if you want ... start after the first graphic break in the text, where he says, "I'm once again rather upset with Blizzard. ... Blizzard took the initiative to add a ladder system in Battle.net. Competition, no matter what type, tends to bring out the worst in people and also tends to bring out the worst people..."

DOM is inspiring me to start writing editorials too! Watch this space when I explain why I think it is improper for Interplay to force me to have a ranking in order to use their Free MAX2.NET server ... and display that ranking to everyone who happens to come by! I would like to play for fun ... and not care what my ranking is, but Interplay seems bent on embarrassing me if my ranking is a bit low! (I am speaking for the many others who like to play just for fun here). TURN OFF THE RANKING! Put it in a /whois command if you must have it! Oh oh ... editorial was starting early (and for all you kibitzers out there ... it is not because I am a horrible player ... I won 9 games and lost 1 so far (that was all the games that I was able to finish without a crash)  :) - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 Official Strategy Guide postponed!

Tue, July 21: The Brady book "MAX2 Official Strategy Guide" by Mark Walker has been delayed. It was to be published on July 6 ... now it is due out on July 20. The book is to be 216 pages with a retail price of $19.99 ... ISBN 1566867894 - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 Patch 1.3.1 or 1.4 still not released!

Tue, July 21, 9:15pm Pacific time: The new patch is not yet available! I will keep watch and let you know when it is safe to try to play MAX2 again. - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)Mission Impossible!

Tue, July 21: Campaign 2, Mission 3 is impossible to win in Turn Based or Simultaneous Turn modes! I have posted a complete page detailing how easy it is to determine that it is impossible to win. If this is true, then it means that this mission, as released, was not tested in TB or SIM modes! - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 Crashes and Bugs!

Tue, July 21: There is now a special section devoted to reporting MAX2 Crashes, Bugs and Patch information! The main page for that section is fondly titled CRASH! The page listing bugs is called BUGS. This will be a handy way to track MAX2 bugs, crashes and patches. - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 Patch 1.3.1 will be the next one released!

Tue, July 21, 12:06 Pacific time: Interplay has said that patch 1.3.1 will be released tonight or tomorrow. This announcement corresponds with HEAVEN's starting a brand new page ... fondly called CRASH! You may wish to check this page frequently to see what some MAX2 bugs are. To submit a report of a MAX2 bug send an EMAIL to max2@interplay.com with a cc: to CaptComal@hotmail.com with a summary of the bug. Currently, CRASH lists the bugs that Interplay claims will be fixed with Patch 1.3.1 - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 Patch 1.4 still not released!

Tue, July 21, noon Pacific time: Interplay has said that fixes for many of the GAME CRASHES are in the 1.4 patch. Only problem is that they are not releasing the 1.4 patch. I will keep watch and let you know when it is safe to try to play MAX2 again. - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)Improved HEADER on all MAX2 Heaven pages!

Tue, July 21: The header at the top of every MAX2 Heaven page now has a link to the FULL NEWS as well as HEADLINE NEWS in the top left corner.  The top right corner now has links to the LINKS page (a good place to start your MAX2 day) and the DOWNLOAD FILES page. - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)Not playing MAX2 until 1.4 patch

Tue, July 21: I am not playing MAX2 any further until the 1.4 patch is out. 14 out of 17 games I tried to play CRASHED. This is typical for most MAX2 customers from the feedback I have received. People actually brag about a game they managed to finish.  This is NOT a sign of a game that is ready for release to stores. - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)Good START page for MAX2

Tue, July 21: The MAX2 Links page was rearranged and makes a good page to start on when checking out the latest MAX2 going ons. At the top are links to the three Message Forums, then links to various MAX2 sites including specific links to MAX2 Watch and MAX2 News. At the end of the LINKS page is a link to all the Previews and Reviews of MAX2 (so you can check out what others are saying officially). You can always get to this LINKS page from any Heaven page ... just click on LINKS in the top right corner of any page! - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 Review in Games Domain

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)WINNER ALERT!

Fri, July 17: Interplay has finally announced who the winner of the "Name The Robot" contest is.

Congratulations go to Thomas Locke. He submitted the name "EbO Unit". Interplay is sending Thomas a MAX2 T-Shirt, a box copy of MAX2 and a box copy of MAX1.

Hey Thomas ... send us an EMail with comments on how you came up with that name and we will publish them here ... the curious need to know!  Send to CaptComal@hotmail.com

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)IRC CHAT

Thur, July 16: The next official IRC CHAT with the MAX2 Development team is now scheduled for Thursday, July 23 at 6pm Pacific time on the IRC server CHAT.ANNEX.COM in channel #INTERPLAY. - Interplay

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)KALI UPDATE!

Wed, July 15: Our KALI INFO page has been updated with info on how to use AUDIBLE ALERTS in KALI. - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)KALI FLASH!

Wed, July 15: The IgLou server has for some reason been dropped from the server list (sad, sorry to see it go).

We found a better server to use as a meeting place for people waiting to play MAX2 however:

620 Katan's Lair (205.218.22.26)

Here is part of the welcome message to Katan's Lair: "Welcome to Katan's family inn, where countless kali'ers have come to sleep and be /away. We offer free overnight stays for all the ladder players who seek a haven to hide from the lamers that haunt Kali Stl#1, and Other Servers."

It seems there will always be people in the CHAT room on this server ... however, there may be less babbling about nonsense.  If you join the CHAT room just a simple "ANYONE FOR MAX2?" will do.  Then wait awhile since most of the people are not watching their KALI window all the time.  See our KALI information for tips on using KALI for MAX2 Gaming! - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)FIND MAX2 GAMES!

Wed, July 15: Find MAX2 games! We now have a page of tips on how to find other MAX2 players for multiplayer games. If you have other advice you would like to share with others via this page, please send your suggestions to CaptComal@hotmail.com ... Thanks. - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)FLASH! 1.3 Patch released!

Fri, July 10: The 1.3 Patch for the retail MAX2 CD is now available to download. It is 1.7Meg, slightly bigger than the previous patch.   This patch should include the auto-updater!

Interplay has informed us that the 1.3 patch will contain an auto-updater! This is how it will work... once you have installed the 1.3 patch (now scheduled for release Friday or Saturday), everytime you log onto the MAX2.NET free Internet server (via the multiplayer game Internet option), your game will automatically be updated to the latest version.  Version 1.3 fixes some major crash bugs and should be much more stable in multiplayer games! Assorted miscellaneous bugs fixed plus these:

1. added 256 char. limit in chat edit boxes.
2. autopatch functions now in place.
3. constructor interrupted while building crash fixed.
4. campaign endgame fixes for: 1-3, 3-5, 3-8, 4-1, 4-9.
5. name changes in hotseat game fixed.
6. modem overloaded with packets fixed.
7. 30 sec. log-in timeout removed.
8. rank adjustment if game under 5 min. corrected.
9. reformatted options menu in host/join screens.
10. build list empty crashes fixed.
11. server timeout crash fixed.
12. non-logging of rank fixed. Occurred in 1.2 patch only.
13. word wrap added to chat screen.

A 1.4 patch is already being planned to improve the gameplay speed in multiplayer games, but should roll in automatically for you via the auto-updater!

However ... perhaps most important is that Interplay has three full time people working on the MAX2 project for at least a couple more weeks... and one of them for at least 2 months!  So keep sending EMail to max2@interplay.com with reports of any bugs or game glitches (remember to casually mention that you really need ALLIANCES in the game, as advertised). - CaptComal

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 FORUM

Wed, July 8: The MAX2 Alliance website has a nice forum open to all to discuss MAX2 and has granted us permission to share linking to it (kind of like how we share links to the MAX2 WATCH LOGBOOK with the MAX2 Madness website). Jump over and see what hot discussion are going on.  Feel free to post replies or start new message threads. Click your browsers BACK button to get back here when you are done. - CaptComal

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

START SUMMER WITH A BLAST
FLAT CAT'S M.A.X.2 HITS RETAIL

Irvine, California, July 6, 1998 -- Flat Cat, a division of Interplay Productions (NASDAQ:IPLY), announced today its first release, the fast-action, real-time strategy game, M.A.X.2: Mechanized Assault & Exploration(tm). The highly anticipated sequel to the critically-acclaimed M.A.X.(tm), will be the first Interplay title to include multiplayer gameplay via Interplay's new, free Internet matching service so that gamers will be able to battle it out with their friends via the Internet. With the help of a select group of beta-testers, the M.A.X.2 development team has implemented additional unique features to make this stunning sequel the ultimate strategy game for their discerning audience. M.A.X.2 is available on CD-ROM for Windows(r) 95 based PCs and 100% compatibles.

Flat Cat is bringing its technology expertise to the forefront of the real-time gaming genre with M.A.X.2 by introducing a multitude of exclusive new features. With the click of a button, gamers will be able to log on to MAX2.net, a dedicated Internet server. Players from around the world will be able to chat, view opponent records/ping times as well as play the game. Game statistics will also be kept on the server, allowing players to match themselves against others of equal skill. Variable view technology, a first for the strategy genre, will allow players to rotate the map from a standard top down view to a 60° isometric display. Parallax scrolling creates 3D terrain where units on higher ground appear larger than units on lower ground, giving the player the realistic feel of soaring above the terrain. "Shipping M.A.X.2 is very exciting for us," said Ali Atabek, Flat Cat division head. "It's our first title to ship under the Flat Cat label and we're very proud of the result. We took our highly praised game, M.A.X., and added gamers' suggestions, making this a true gamer's game."

Many advanced gameplay options are also being incorporated such as spy cams, line-of-sight, waypoint commands, plus several new automatic functions such as the intelligent auto-move and auto-fire controls. An expanded set of upgrade options and research abilities, plus a complete scenario editor will also be included.

Additional information about M.A.X.2 can be found on the M.A.X.2 web site at http://www.interplay.com/max2/index.html. Flat Cat, a division of Interplay Productions, is devoted to developing leading edge strategy games. aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2.NET Server still not working

Mon, July 6: The MAX2.NET server is still not working! This is the free internet connection that comes with the MAX2 game to allow multiplayer games. It still disconnects you about 2 minutes after you logon.

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 Maps & Kids Missions

Mon, July 6: Pictures and discriptions of all the maps included with the Retail MAX2 are now up (including the three new ones) on our MAPS page.

Two new Just For Kids scenarios are now available: Man and Missile Maddness. Take a look at the discription pages ... it includes a picture of the map as well as a screen shot of every enemy unit that you will be hunting, as well as pictures of your combat units!

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2.NET Server Not Working

Sun, July 5: The MAX2.NET server is not working! This is the free internet connection that comes with the MAX2 game to allow multiplayer games. It was working until about 6pm Pacific USA time Saturday, and technically the server is still "UP" since it allows you to logon. However, it disconnects everyone after about 2 minutes, therefore it is "not working".

Interplay has been informed of this problem and hopefully will be able to back off any changes they made early Saturday evening and restore its functionality sometime Monday morning.

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 HEAT - Can't Take It anymore!

Fri, July 3: HEAT - I can't take it!

I downloaded HEAT last night ... over 5 1/2 MEG worth! Then I installed it. Then I ran HEAT and it took over an hour to update files. Then I tried to run it inside Microsoft Internet Explorer 3, but it just sat there doing nothing. Next I tried running it inside Netscape 3.04 and it spent over 10 minutes loading pictures. Cancelled out and tried again ... still VERY LONG to load in, but I did get into the system. Very graphic intensive complete with ads.   Hard to figure out.

Final straw ... I got word from MAX2 players trying to play on HEAT and they tried 5 or 6 times to play and never got it to work.

I am sticking with KALI. It is QUICK (takes 5 seconds to load and run) since it is text based, but it still has multiple windows and is easy to use. Check our KALI INFO page for more about it.

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 PLAY & CHAT WITH THE DEV TEAM

Fri, July 3: Starting on Tuesday, July 7, the MAX2 Development Team will be hosting a PLAY & CHAT WITH THE DEV TEAM session from 5pm-7pm Pacific time every Tuesday and Thursday nights. They did not say where this would be, but likely it will be on the FREE MAX2.NET INTERNET multiplayer gaming service that comes with MAX2 on the MAX2 server.

WARNING!

If you want to play a game with someone, you and they must be running the exact same version of MAX2. If you have the final DEMO, you can only play against others with the final DEMO and not against the full retail MAX2 gamers.

Likewise, if you have the full retail MAX2 and have patched it to version 1.2, you cannot play against the full retail MAX2 gamers who have not yet patched the game.

aangelr.gif (2897 bytes)MAX2 on HEAT

Thur, July 2: Apparently MAX2 plays well on HEAT as well as KALI. I am downloading the FREE version of HEAT now and should have a report soon. It seems it is completely free (you only have to pay for the Premium Service that includes tournaments and points to buy stuff). If you want to try it as well, it is about a 5Meg download from HEAT:

Thur, July 2: Tips for playing MAX2 multiplayer on the free Internet service (MAX2.NET):

Once you start the game, it can only run in full screen mode. However, you can hit ALT-TAB to go back to your Windows95 desktop. Warning: if you do this while setting up a game or in the chat rooms or any menu between them, the game will crash if you are ALT-TAB'd away for 30 seconds or more (even less)! This is because their server polls you every 30 seconds and gets upset if your game is not responding to it.
