A) It is possible to beat it, and, yes, it is difficult to gauge how many of what kind of units adds up to the total amount. My advice: lose as few as possible! Seriously, sacrifice one or two scouts, and you may lose a missle crawler, but you need the rest, it seems.

Group two missle crawlers, a scanner, two mobile a/a, and a scout together and sneak (close to the south of the map) over to the eastern most bridge. Ram your scout right up the middle of the bridge to find as many of the enemy structures as you can. If you right click on an enemy structure, you can see its range and scan area. Use terrain to your advantage, and sneak two missle crawlers up the west side of the south west slope of the bridge. Move your scanner way south of the bridge by the trees. Use your missle crawlers to start picking away at castings, gun pods, etc., until your scanner shows no hostiles on the southwest part of the bridge. Move your missle crawlers straight south, then west (out of the range of the gun pods and bio pods, then move them square by square north until they have cleared the south of the bridge.

Begin moving all your other units in groups of eight, each with some anti-air defense, toward the east bridge.

Continue moving the missle crawlers north on the east bridge until all radar stations and gun pods are clear. When you see another row of castings, blow a hole in them and you're home free!  - Tom Mazzullo (from Reliable MAX2 Players Strategy Forum)
